Creepozoids - Creepozoids(Blu Ray) [Full Moon Features - 2017]Creepozoids is a wonderfully prime shot of 1980’s schlock bringing together elements of sci-fi, horror, creature feature, and the post apocalyptic. Here from Full Moon Futures is the first ever Blu ray release of this 1987 film, and I must say it’s one of the best ‘bad’ movies I’ve seen in some time. The film was the second(nonporn) feature from then-up & coming to B movie director David DeCoteau, who has gone on to direct a whopping 131 films & counting. The film stars eighties scream queen Linnea Quigley plus a tiny cast (of four) unknowns, and it’s a really excellent example of how to create a great, pacey, and truly fun B-movie on less than a shoe string.
The film is set in 1998, some six years after a worldwide nuclear war has reduced the worlds cities to rubble & ruin. Enter a group of army deserters who need to find shelter from an acid rain downpour. They come across an abandoned government research facility, where seemingly bizarre & deranged experiments have been taking place. And slowly but surely the group encounters these experiments- which take in: an towering Alien-like creature with acid blood, giant rats, black goo spurting zombies, and a razor toothed baby that looks a spit for the monster from the It’s Alive franchises.
We get a wonderful blend of: campy & silly dialogue, upbeat & cheesy synth sound-tracking, great lo-fi yet effective effects & creature designs, dodgy stock footage, and a shower scene with Ms Quigley. It has a rapid fire pace that’s full to the brim with every sci-fi, horror, and monster cliché you can think of. I’d be long aware of the existence of Creepozoids, and boy was it a real treat to finally see it, as it’s everything you could expect & want from a horror/ sci-fi B movie from the 1980’s.
The Blu Ray features a fully digital remastered version of the film from the original 35MM camera negative. And it features a 16x9 Widescreen print, with 5.1 Surround Sound. Extras wise we get a commentary track from the director, and this is both amusing & informative. As he discusses the origin of project, the truly micro budget( $100 for set design), the actors, and the films two main settings- a 1200 square foot soundstage in a shady part of LA, and a corridor in a self-storage unit. You also get a selection of on set pictures, a trailer, and a selection of trailers from other Full Moon films. The Blu ray is region free, so it can be enjoyed where ever you are in the world.
Really if you’re a B-movie/ ‘bad’ film fan you need to have Creepozoids in your life. As it’s a truly great, campy, silly, and eventful horror/ sci-fi ride that keeps you amused & entertained throughout. The film can either be bought directly from Full Moon here, or can be purchased at any purveyors of 1980’s cinematic schlock Roger Batty
