Chier - La Veuve Au Vagin Denté [Self Release - 2015]La Veuve Au Vagin Denté is one of the early releases from this respected & highly prolific French walled noise project. It dates from September 2015, and came in either a physical CDR edition (of 15 copies) or a digital download. Sadly the CDR’s have long gone, but you can listen & download the release from the projects Bandcamp. I’ve reviewing the CDR version- the disc its self-features red & black spray painted front. And the folded sleeve is black & white, featuring on its front cover a naked woman sitting on a chair holding a skull in one hand & a candle in the other. Like a lot of this projects other release there’s a distinctively grim & lo-fi black metal look to the releases presentation.
The disc features five tracks- though two of these are short 13-to- 50-second intros, so in reality, you get three full walls, and these have the running time between nineteen & just over thirty minutes. Each track uses just Roman numerals as its title.
Opening up proceedings we have "I", and after a few moments of erratic searing ‘n’ roasting texturing we settle down into a fairly firm ‘wall’. This brings together an often galloping bank of roasting low –end, with this skating ‘n’ whistling higher pitched & thinner lines of tone. The roasting texture gives a nice feeling of barren boiling-ness , while the skating texture is quite playful & at times almost harmonic. This first track comes in at the twenty-three-minute mark and nicely pulls you into the releases with it's brutal-yet- semi playful feel.
The next full-length ‘wall’ comes in the form of "III", and this is a mix of a firm & tight grainy boil, which is weaved by smaller jitters, hisses, and scrapes. Again there’s a nice feeling of searing intensity about the track, and we still have the odd touch of more playfulness in the smaller sub-tones, though it’s a lot more subdued compared to the opening track.
"V " is the final track here and is the longest at just over the thirty-minute mark. And this track was only available on the CDR version, so unless you can track down a copy you won’t be able to hear it. The ‘wall’ brings together a deep & slightly judder bond churn, and this is surrounded by layers of cracking ‘n’ rattling descent. The track very much has the vibe of an earth cracking & tree root ripping earthquake taking place in the middle of a forest. It certainly feels a lot more weighty & crushing compared to the other two full-length tracks, and there’s no sign of the playful edges here…this is intense bone crushing & skull popping HNW.
So in conclusion La Veuve Au Vagin Denté is another consistent wall-noise release from Chier. And if fancy checking this out it would be well worth trying to track down a copy of the physical release, as the last track is certainly worth hearing. Roger Batty
