Windy & Carl - Consciousness [Kranky - 2001]These people are not musicians, they are scientists. Let me explain; They are searching for the right modulation, the right vibration... The right frequency! What goal are they trying to reach, what will they discover (if they haven't already)? Who knows, but it's a nice trip when you tag along. My personal opinion on their researches is that they are trying to find a direct connection to what ceases to be as soon as you think about it (the subconscious for those who don't like my poetry! Barbarians!). When I listen to that album, I feel like I am orbiting the earth, floating above it all, comfortable and out of reach, warm and fuzzy. I feel like in a dream. There is not better music than this if you want to reach that 'not quite sleeping, not quite awake' state. Pick up those dusty headphones (well, mines are), sit in a comfortable leather chair (I wish I had one), turn down the light, kick off your shoes and stare at that spider on the wall for a while. You are now part of the experiment.Sometimes you will hear some guitar chords lost in reverb, some warm basslines and keyboard melodies, but those things are not as important individually as the whole so it would be pointless to analyze them. The ambience present on this disc couldn't be contained in a stadium and yet it's delicate enough to gently put a newborn to sleep; it's paradoxal music, so minimalistic yet so vast. It's like being back in the womb, in some cocoon or in front of some medieval fireplace, sitting in some antique chair while the dead people that are hanging on the walls (I'm talking about paintings here) are smiling at you.Sometimes if I listen to it when I'm not in the right mindset I just think to myself: "damn, it's like she fell asleep on her keyboard". And then I start to doubt, "is the music really good or am I imagining things?", but as soon as I put the disc on during the night, when I'm starting to feel tired... I know that it's intentional. You don't need bells and whistles to make great music, you just need to connect emotionally and this is what Windy & Carl are able to do. Some tracks are more minimalistic and simpler, some other have more things going on and even some whispered vocals by Windy (very low in the mix), but the important thing is that it works as a whole and takes you on a nice and pleasant journey.Yes, this is definitely the most pretentious review I have written, and yet it feels right. I did not have much choice since this is not the kind of music that you can or are even supposed to describe and analyze on a technical and superficial level. It is music that lives on a visceral plane. Definitely not for everybody, everyday & everywhere but personally I like it.File under: dreamy drony spacey.
