Saroos - Saroos [Alien Transistor - 2006]Saroos try and mesh together electro beat scarps with a hip hop vibe and indie Emo guitar melodies. Coming out on Notwist's Alien Transistor label that co released the Amazing 13 & god album with Anticon last year. Were 13 & god managed to meld these genres in a concise, well sculpted and edgy way, sadly Saroos too often miss the mark. The album feels like a collection of musically ideas and sound sketches of what could become great tracks, there’s been no really effort with structures or song writing, it almost feels this has just been literal throw together. Sure it’s nicely enough produced and has some moments that really shine, but more often then not you have to wade through a lot of dicking around to get memorable and structured elements. Only a few tracks work here : During this course- has a very anticon vibe, maybe very much like Pedestrian or Alias ( could well be his voice here) delivery- a nice fast paced memorable track. Trouble sleep with it’s laid back eerier vibe, some nice altered xylophone like tones, and the slow moving in of guitar tone. making a heart felt and memorable melody. Mixing guitar and beats perfectly, that sadly disappears before its giving chance to develop, which is offten the case through out the album. It’s a really pity because I really tried to like this, maybe on there next release they’ll put more thought into song construction. The elements are there to make great music, but clearly not focused in the right direction. Roger Batty
