Shit & Shine - Jealous of Shit & Shine [Riot Season - 2006]Shit & shine mix drum machine pounding ,all manner of Percussion, stuck droning guitar riffs, noise and lots of silly, bizarre and often funny samples. All in a very British way, whether non brit listeners would get the some of the references and the humour is difficult to say. But I found it a wonderful haphazard noisy ride, that possible sometimes out plays it's comedy factor. Most of the nine tracks last from two minutes to near ten, with one whopping half an hour track which claims to be a cover of The Strangulated Beat offs Practising to be a doctor. Quite how much of this is like the original is unclear, as I’ve not heard it, but I suspected they’ve just taken the riff and streached and pulled it to it’s 30 minute lengthy. Adding all manner of bizarre nudge, rumble and bell ring noise elements, as well as comic dialogue ,like such as underlaid studio banter about trying to sound threatening. As the churning sub punked Motorhead riff rolls on and on with endless drum pounds. Other high points include the drum machine abuse, via guitar chug and noisy clutter of when extreme dogs go wrong- with threatening and comic chav banter going on underneath. There are 2 bakers now, links ritual drumming, cheap horror film synth vibe and muffled disturbing dialogue. Towards the end it wonders into a rough and ready more sleazy Nurse with wound vibe -with it’s sampled foreign tongues, water sounds and sexual moans. Whether you’ll enjoy this comes down to the Frank zappa's question "does humour belong in music?". If you think ‘yes’ then you and shit & shine will getting on like a house on fire. If your answer is 'No', it’s best to steer clear of their Derek and Clive take on noisy rock, because if you don’t enter this it the right frame of mind, I could imagine it been very annoying indeed.
