Worship - Thoughts [Self release - 2024]Thoughts is a recent four-track release from the rather mysterious Worship project, which started out as a straight-walled noise venture- but recently has pushed more drone/ experimental elements. And that’s where this release sits, between wall & drone. Cover artwork-wise for this self-released digital affair we get a monochrome picture of a nude female model standing on her tiptoes with a sheet of black netted fabric around her midriff, and her hands posed in a pray. The album can be found here.
We open with the one-minute track “Welcoming” which is built around a church organ-like sustain and a lightly rumbling tone drone. We then drop into “Warm” for this nineteen-minute track we find a decidedly tight ‘n’ throbbing ‘wall’ built around a muffled bass purr, mid-ranged rattles, and light skittering static. The track feels both weightily compressing, and soothing- with the whole thing feeling akin to snuggling your face into a huge warm mound- be it flesh, cushions, or linen.
Next is “Deep” which rolls in at the twenty-two-minute mark. This ‘wall’ is a tightly woven/ if muffled & murky blend of line rustling/ churning textures- with a purr bass undercarriage. For this track I’m getting a very sub-aquatic vibe- either watching a dense shoal of fish weaving through a barred gate underwater, or air bubbling/ knocking caused by a set of underwater tubes. This track is excellent, and you really do get sucked in/ hypnotized by the wall Worship has created.
Lastly, we have “Medications” which clocks in at dead on the twenty-seven minutes. Here we find a hazed/ pressing bass line mixed with lightly chopped/ rattling tones. Again like the first track, I’m getting a modified churn organ vibe.
Thoughts is another well-conceived and engaging release from Worship, and if you like where wall and drone you’ll most certainly dig this. Roger Batty
