Dosis Letalis & Arboreal - Focus / Concentration [ Mutual Aid Records - 2024]Focus / Concentration is a three track journey into textured walled noise. The CDR/ digital download brings together Serbia’s Dosis Letalis, and Thailand’s Arboreal- both projects offer up a single twenty minute solo track, then we get a twenty minute collaboration- so in total the release takes in around a hour of noise. The release appears on Massachusetts Mutual Aid Records. The black-on- black CDR comes in a plastic sleeve- the front cover takes in colour collage, taking in someone holding a brain, a bat, a butterfly and venus fly trap, and eye- with a backdrop pink/ red wash, this continues on the back sleeve, with 3" Vinyl sliver vinyl sticker feature the cover art and a Bandcamp code. This physical edition is of twenty four copies, and as of writing the label still has copies.
The first track is from Dosis Letalis, and is entitled “Focus”. This blends together a bubbling mud like tone, with constantly grain crack ‘n’ roll- with a distant aquatic like knocking in the background, which to me rather brought to mind the sound of a heart beat underwater. The elements are perfectly balanced together- so you can here every detail of the texutes, and I must say I really like the ‘walls’ mix of the grainy and dry, and wet & churning. As the track progresses it feels like the tones/ textures maybe becoming more rapid/ urgent- but I suspected this is just a trick of the wall. Next we have Arboreal track, which is entitled “Concentration”. Here we find a mixture of a tight ‘n’ juddering hack/ purr, a low-key/ skittering hazed rumble, a distant cluttering. The track feels akin to walking on ground that steadily shuddering & light slightly ground, and when on head phones it almost creates a feeling of slight queasy unbalanced-ment , so I’d advised be seated when playing this track. Once again, the textures are perfectly balanced for maximum effect.
The final track entitled “Attention” is the collab. Here we find a slightly denser wall- which brings together constantly reeling ‘n’ rolling tone, a muffled- semi industrial rumble ‘n’ knock- with these hacking static, and sudden jumping ‘n’ juddering subtones, though I’m not completely sure if these are real or not. On the first few plays through, I found this the lesser of the three tracks- but the more I’ve played it, the more I’m become pulled in by the track- with the might be there/ might not be there elements a real pull. Though I’m positive in the last three / four minutes all the textures feel more buck & violent
Focus / Concentration is a excellent split- with all three tracks bringing together a distinctive blend of tones/ textures. It’s great to see this release getting a physical release, instead of the seemingly now scene normal digital download, as this really is a quilty wall release- which needs to be heard by more folks.
