Whore's Breath - A Real Pain In My Neck [Stemms Audio - 2024]A Real Pain In My Neck is a wonderful example of layer-shifting/ darting textured walled noise. The twenty-two-minute wall from this Cincinnati project, most certainly keeps you on your toes, with one's mind getting a workout as you try to keep -up with/ follow the textural layers/ threads. I guess you’d call this an EP, and like much of the scene output, it is a digital release. Fitting the release's title, we have a scan of someone's neck, and the EP can be downloaded here.
The single self-titled track rolls in at the twenty-two minutes and forty-four-second mark. The ‘wall’ is constructed around a rushing ‘n’ crisp pelt, a mid-range roaming crackle ‘n’ snap, and a selection of rattle, roll, and jitter sub-tones. Every so often we have this stop/ start session, and even after several plays, I’m not sure where this is occurring. The whole thing has a rather 3D quality as if you are physically moving through the cracking haze-like structure of the ‘wall’.
At points, it seems like the whole thing will completely thin back, or suddenly become thicker/ more overwhelming but it never does. But instead remains constantly flowing, yet layer unpredictable.
A Real Pain In My Neck is another classy textured-based example of walled noise from Whore’s Breath. If you enjoy walling that screws with your head, this is a must! Roger Batty
