Merzbow, Carlos Giffoni & Jim O'Rourke - Electric Dress [No Fun Productions - 2007]Electric Dress represents a live collaboration/ improvised set between the trio recorded live into Tokyo 2006, then edited and mastered by Mr O’Rourke. All to make a Rolla coaster almost freefall 50 mintue noise ride, with a lovely analogue feel about it. It goes from streached out sparse bubbling sci-fi like electronics, to denser more complex noise shapes- where all parties concerned weav and build around each other in fine fashion. To fire screeching banks of analogy burns and ripples, phraser sound bombardments, static storms and rhythmic noise ice pickings . There's also nods towards more dismantled rock based elements, not in a obvious way, but in the melding of chugging banks of guitar like sound here and there in the sound soup. I guess this comes from a mix of O’Rourke' influence on the piece and Merzbow new interest in rock like elements. Oddly I found this quite difficult to get into and enjoy, but I got there in the end & now find it a rewarding long form piece. Maybe it because in places it just feels a bit too structureless and free fall for it’s own good. Roger Batty
