Turner Cody - The Buds Of May [Digitail Recordings - 2007]Imagine a mix of Syd Barret's clever word play and quirky fast strum folk that sometimes just about holds together. With a geeky, sometimes dead pan American edge, some haphazard blues and rock ‘n’ roll vibes - thats more often than not shambling & tuneful-you get the rather wonderful Turner Cody. The songs are mainly built around low-fi folk fast strum meets indie bob- there’s nothing too fancy or too flash here just honest to god clever wordy song craft and tuneful /cheery strumming & foot tapping-ness. The tracks never last much more than 2 minutes mark each- been smart, snapy treats you’ll want to gobble down again and again, in awe of Turners wordy wonder and tuneful easy. There are odd moments of contemplation, more sombre world heavy-ness where the pace it less buoyant and guitar melodic unfold slower with the word-play been of dead husbands shoes, umbilical sleeves, drops of mercury, the hymen of your throat, and the heart of the maze. Buds of may Offers up 12 tracks that all told clock-in at just over half an hour, this is small but perfect formed brimming with great imagery, quirky happy-go lucky album making this feel like twice it length, but in a good way. An album I’ve seemingly falling head over heels with, that if I didn’t check myself would be on repeat endlessly. Quirky, clever, memorable and highly addictive so come and get yourself a Buds of May habit too. Roger Batty
