Capricorns - River, Bear your Bones [Rise Above - 2008]The Capricorns second album River, Bear your bones is a very inventive yet approachable mix of no nonsense mettlic riffling , stoner rock, prog, 70’s rock, punk and traditional metal. Each of the eight instremental song on offer here is a rolla Costa ride its own right as the band pull, tumble and chug you through one riff after another, each one as memorable, atmospheric, fist punching and head banging as the last. Really it feels like they’ve boiled up the last 30 years worth of mettlic and rock fair to siphon off and distil the best elements for this album; but it never become too progy or show offish with over long solo’s- the riff is the most important thing here and each of the three members pull together to make each as rewarding as the last. As well as the expected guitar, bass and drums set up there are slight hints of analogue synth work here and there but these are never too obviously or stand-out there used mainly to deepen, or detail sonic twists and turns or add in atmospheric tone in the slower more cinematic moments. A very satisfying excise in twisting ‘n’ turning riff worships that mangers wonderfully to balance precision, complex shifts and superb playing with honest head banging riff wonder. Roger Batty
