Thunderwheel - Credo [The Eastern Front - 2009]Thunderwheel is the new project from Vadim Gusis who is the sonic mastermind behind the wonderful Russian music meets ambient and folk of Agnivolok & respected ethic industrial ambient collective Chaos as a Shelter. And through Thunderwheel shows Gusis usual flair for varied and exotic instrumentation this is quite different sounding from either project. Thunderwheel’s main sonic focus is a Siel Cruise analogue 80’s Synthesiser which Gusis users to play out the tracks cinematic, quirky and often ethnic tinged melodies with. He then adds around the Siel Cruise central sound the tones of Musical saw played by of Igor Krutogolov and theremin by Slava Smelovsky along with a selection of unusual instruments played by Gusis himself and the odd dabs of field recordings. I guess its best described as 80’s soundtrack music with a distinct eastern European edge, meets industrial and surreal clunking, via folky and choral touches. Credo often brought to my mind those very odd Russian or Ukraine cartoons I remember watching as a child, that were both sombre, strange and often coldly other. At its best the album creates strange dusty yet nostalgic comforting harmonic mood scapes to fall into, on the down side quite a few of the tracks feel somewhat interchangeable but I guess that is often the problem with using one sound source as the tracks centres. All told an interesting new project from the creative and quirky mind of Gusis- for fans of off-centre analogue synth music, European 80’s soundtracks and industrial music with a quirky and child-like edges.
