Firebird - Hot Wings [Rise Above - 2006]Hot Wings comes across as a long lost album by a 70’s rock/ blues mixing together a feeling of The Free, Stepping Wolf, Thin Lizzy, with Jimi Hendrix funk-rock guitar edge. Even the production has really nice 70’s vibe: a wonderful, raw and under-produced quality. This is the fourth album by guitarist Bill Steer led project, Of course Steer is most known for the early line-up of Napalm Death and of course later Carcass. Hot Wings is enjoyable enough heads down, rocking collection of songs, with some neat slide and bluesy guitar licks, which mixes its influence nicely to make memorable tunes. The only downside is it doesn’t really add much to what you'll have heard before. The riffs plod along, guitar appear were expected, chorus roll in right on time. Guess it would have been nice to have seen the band take some interesting twist and turns, Add Some risks in the songs. But as a no thrills 70’s rock album this works fine. One for those look for a really nice balanced collection of retro tunes, nicely composed and put together. That brings to mind long endless highways, and frayed denim jackets, and roar of Harleys.Roger Batty
