Cumsleg Borenail - NullMind NilGirlfriend [Death To Dynamics - 2022]NullMind NilGirlfriend is a two-track wall-noise release from this British project who have a decidedly surreal-to-grotesque sexual-themed tilt to their work. This is a digital download album from UK’s Death To Dynamics. Cover artwork wise we have a photo of a series of tinny red painted tin legs- which taking into account the track titles, and tone the projects name are very sexualized. The release can be downloaded directly from here.
I dropped by Cumsleg Borenail bandcamp- and seemingly they started creating work in March of this year- with around ten releases to their name at present. The bandcamp features gory-yet-surreal picture art, as well as a pronounced sexualized tone- and I’m guessing that whoever is behind the project may have some kind of modern art background- due to the tone/ look of their other releases.
The first track here is “Clit” which runs at the 14.44 mark. The ‘wall’ is a tautly tense mixture of constant spindle churning, and baying-slightly- hazed jittering. This creates a vibe of both focused drilling tonality, and smarting sear which is rather engrossing. I could easily have listened to this track for twice the length, and I like the way the slightly uncertainly presence of the hazed jitter makes one feel like the whole thing could suddenly grind to a halt.
The second and final track is “Septum”, and this slides in at 20.01 mark. Here we find another blend of two layers of scraping hiss, which are slightly running out of time with each other to create this feeling of loosely seared un-balancement. Both textures sit in a similar mid and thin range, and this creates a feeling of both manically rushing against the grains, and nervy spiralling flow to the ‘wall’. I can’t say I’m as taken by this ‘wall’ as the first track- but it is an interesting more busy take on the whole whiteout type of HNW.
So, in finishing I’ll certainly be looking forward to checking out more work from Cumsleg Borenail- as NullMind NilGirlfriend severs us up two worth examples of the walled noise form, and the theme/ tone of both the project and release is fairly distinctive/ original with-in the scene. Roger Batty
