Raté - Une Pause [Self release - 2024]Une Pause presents the listener with two twenty five minute dives into muffled, murky and crude walled noise from this Bordeaux based project. With each ‘wall’ been as brutally constricting as each other This is a digital self-released affair- with the cover artwork taking in a black back ground with static grain/ slightly greyed snow spotted picture. The album can be found and downloaded here.
Going from raté’s bandcamp they’ve been active since November of last year- putting out around twelve releases thus far, so up to normal prolific standards of the walled noise scene. This is my first taster of the projects work- though I did play through a few of it’s other releases- Une Pause is the one that stood out to me, though that’s not to say it’s either a ground-breaking, or a particularly distinctive release.
We open with “La Vie Est Une Pause” which rather brought to mind Vomir- in it’s more sludgy ‘n’ crude setting. The ‘wall’ is a constantly flowing mix of low-end broken drain like chug ‘n’ rush, and mid ranged spurt. It feels akin to been held under a jaggedly broken water pipe- that’s constantly spilling out thick, rancid, and stinking liquid. The track creates a suitable oppressive and nihilistic vibe.
Next is “Dans Le Rien Sans Fin”. This opens with a few seconds of taut arcing electricity like tonality- which is pretty soon engulfed in a dense/ rapid blend of rush hiss, choppy judder, and harsh pelt. Again there is a liquid like tone to some of the textures here- but it’s all underfed by the initial arcing electro tones. So I’m getting images of water rushing constantly over a electrified mesh of steel. Where the first track had relatively recognisable patterns- this track often move towards rapidly rush white out.
It’s always nice to see new additions to the walled noise scene- and especially when it’s from France, who have over the years birthed such great projects as the aforementioned Vomir, and the likes of Bördel Noïr & Chier. And while Une Pause is not top draw walled noise- each track here is rewarding in it’s own right, with it’s own subtly different take of constricting and brutal wall-craft. Roger Batty
