Train Cemetery - Black Chapter [Self release - 2025]Black Chapter is a new four track album from Russia’s Train Cemetery. It finds the project moving away from the complexly layered detail sound it’s known for, to a more progressive building/ shifting walled noise sound. The album is a digital affair released by the artist himself, Elektrostal-based Sergey Pakhomov. It features rather murky cover art, a picture taking in a dark metallic animal skull, and a few alpine three branches. The album can be found here.
Each track featured here comes in at dead on the twenty-minute mark, with a often fairly building/ shifting feel to each, these have a Roman numeral numbering. So “I” opens with a blend of taut billowing and rapidly weaving watery like texturing. Later shifting into choppy electro toning, cluttering crunch, and low end hack rapidty.
“II” start off all pelting crisp, tight hiss, and gritty dart. But later on adds in micro pops ‘n’ chops, and manic muddy chop ‘n’ rush-edged. On “III” we build from a mix of brooding drone climb & tight cluttering hiss. Though to electro drilling meets taut pop- with later shifts to into thick flame roast meets beaded chop.
Finally, we of course have “IV” which moves from electro water weave and noise burr, into galloping thunder bound rip. Before shifting into a blend, an urgent flame like crackle and rapid roast. Before ending on eerily spaced out snaps ‘n’ pops.
It’s always great to get new work from any of Mr Pakhomov's projects, as he always puts a lot of effort/ time into his noise. Black Chapter is certainly pushing Train Cemetery sound down a more progressive wall noise path, and I really look forward to hearing what he’ll do with the project next. All in all, another great release that fans of prog-walling must pickup. Roger Batty
