Rivet - Peck Glamour [Editions Mego - 2025]Optimistic, personal, and exploratory, Rivet's Peck Glamour has Mika Hallbäck returning to Editions Mego with new focus and drive after a traumatic few years. 2023's L+P-2 was the artist experiencing chaos and tumult in his life and expressing this though a darker path. Here with Peck Glamour, Rivet has spent time with the losses and is using what he's learned to push forward and take his project in new directions. Bright, fun, and engaging, this newest on Editions Mego sets the scene for better days and happier times. From the jump, Peck Glamour brings an open, bright view with "Catch Up To Light" and its slowly lilting and lightly plucked essence. Open layers invite the listener in while pulling them forward into the album itself, not overbearing with just enough to whet the appetite, playing soft and luxurious. "Orbiting Empty Cocoon" follows by bringing the sparseness into contact with different types of percussion instruments playing at different but hypnotic beats. These pave the way for "Patitur Butcher" and its electropop dance. The sampled vocals play with the traditional "instruments" over the bass beat to give an exotic feel while sticking to a normal club type tempo and timing. Cooling it down, "Plastic Bag Putain" chugs along with its darkwave inspired synths and rhythm, giving a cyberpunk feel and adding another dimension to Peck Glamour. Upon arriving at the destination, "All That Heaven Allows" warms the listener back up, with its ambience giving spring garden vibes before opening into soft, percussive electronics, continuing to uplift the track and scope of the album. The beauty of Peck Glamour is in its ability to move between the ambient and the groovy at will while still keeping the overall theme of the album in tact. This is evidenced by the next number, "Sacrosanct." More of a traditional electronic number, this uses that formula and replaces many of the sounds and tones from earlier to help blend it into the album as a whole. "Kyrie Geire" takes a few pinches from the darker side of Peck Glamour but buzzes it with some neon to keep it sleek. Not quite the futuristic cyborg from before, but still slightly mechanical, this one has some stones and is a great surprise toward the end of the album. "We Left Before We Came" ends the album on a somber note, with the accordion (concertina?) providing a different tonal quality and vibrancy, along with some lower, bowed instruments to fill in the darker spots quite nicely. A definite shift from the first track but following a solid trajectory, the finale is an excellent piece to close out the album.
Rivet's Peck Glamour is an engaging look at Mika Hallbäck's return to normalcy after suffering some personal trauma. Though varied in approach, the eight tracks on the album all move and groove in similar ways, gelling together to make a cohesive whole, playing between light and dark, all while retaining its sense of optimism. For those into eclectic and fun electronic music, Peck Glamour ticks off all the boxes and will leave a smile on your face. For more Paul Casey
