Anonymous Masturbaudioum - $100 [999 Cuts - 2023]$100 is the most welcome return of Swiss wall-noise project Anonymous Masturbaudioum- who in mid to late 2010 crafted some of the most creative material within the genre. The release is a three-inch CDR- featuring a single nineteen-minute slice of taut, shifting and nasty walled noise texturing The release appeared on Israel’s 999 Cut’s late last year in a small edition- though there are still copies left, as of writing this review. The three-inch CDR comes presented in a special folded envelope and card- these feature collages of prostitutes( with their faces covered in semen) - as the mini album theme is the mental & physical costs of prostitution. Also, there’s a $100 monopoly-money bill with the whole thing presented inside a small woven bag. All in all, it certainly is wonderful to see a new physical release from within the walled noise scene- as much of the scene's output has gone down the digital route- with clearly a lot of thought gone into this release's presentation. To buy direct drop by here The single self-titled track opens with a selection of roughly bucking & trailing static- creating a nicely sleazy & worming air. We get sudden stops ‘n’ starts- as we get a darting blend of cluttering rip, off-patten pull, and curling pile-ups of lack, clutter, and tear. The tonal range stays between the lows and the mids- there certainly is shift & dart here, but we always return to the early bucking ‘n’ battering patterns- which of course ties into the release theme nicely The material feels more rough, crude, and possibly less layered than a lot of the previously Anonymous Masturbaudioum material. But over multiple plays, the subtle details, shifts, and layer manipulation become clear/ present. In finishing $100 is a wonderfully rough ‘n’ crude return from Anonymous Masturbaudioum- which does reward repeat plays. So go and grab one of these before they have gone, support the scene, and hopefully encourage more labels to release physical releases within the walled noise genre!. Roger Batty
