Math - Utterblight [Untitled Record Label - 2024]Math is a twenty-three-minute example of densely droning & rushing walled noise from this UK project. With the whole thing having a nice searing yet oppressive quality about it. Going from the discogs listing Utterblight started last year- with to date three album-length releases, and this short/ EP to their name. This release is from late January this year- being a digital-only affair- with the front cover taking in a picture of what looks like the front of a shed inside a large hall of some sort. The release can be found just here
The single/ self-titled track brings together a drone & lightly churning low end, and a clamouring/ rushing line of rapid static. The low end has a rather purring air vent-like quilty- with it being somewhat set back in its place within the ‘wall’. The static has a rather tight & taut galloping quality to it. Together these elements create a feeling of both pulsing panic and low-key unease. To me, it brought to mind sitting in some vast almost empty waiting room, as the lights above flicker & the aircon dries out your nose & throat.
At points it feels like the static element is shifting up in its speed- but I very much suspect that this is just a trick of the ‘wall’. All in all this remains an engaging/ entrancing track- which I could have easily been twice its length, and I would have still enjoyed it.
It’s always great to see new projects coming into the walled noise scene, and especially in the UK- as it’s not the most active/ busy of wall scenes. This is my second taster of this project, and I must say I like what I’m hearing…here’s hoping that Utterblight stays around for a bit. Roger Batty
