Koobaatoo Asparagus - Shallow Mind State [No Skinny Jeans - 2024]Here’s an HNW two tracker from California’s Koobaatoo Asparagus- with both ‘walls’ hitting around the twenty-five-minute mark, and both are equally battering ‘n’ baying in their simple yet effective attack. It's a self-released digital affair. With the cover artwork being of a mulluted female teen dancing- this looks like a photo from the 80’s- so not quite sure how this ties into the release title. Anyway, the album can be found here.
Both tracks are self-titled, and the first track comes in at dead on the twenty-six-minute mark. It's built around a mid-paced blend of steadily tumbling ‘n’ hacking textures - with the whole sound akin to walking through a rock fall- as larger rocks meet smaller stuttering stones & peddles. With the low ends meeting scarping & slowly rustling textures.
The second track comes in at the 25.26 mark. It’s built around a more urgent blend of constantly spurting flame-like texture, and jittering-to-weaving gritty static texture. With this track, it feels like you are watching some form of varnished-covered wood being slow & methodically moved over by a roasting flame- as the surface starts to crack, burn and buckle. At points, the two textures seemingly merge together into a more rapid, and buckling form.
Shallow Mind State is another consistent example of wall craft from this long-running & prolific project- it’s great to see it still steadily putting out work, and long may it last!. Roger Batty
