Gudrun Gut - I Put A record on [Monika - 2007]Gudrun Gut runs the excellent mainly female based German label Monika, as well as been involved heavily in the German alterative scene and an ex member of Elinstürzende Nebaunten. This is her first full length, which is a clever layered mix of various musically styles and moods. Predominately dance beat/ electronically led, but always inventive and fresh in it’s use of sampling and smart audio editing. Gudrun Vocals are often sexy, sensual and sleek against the tight throb alternative funk beat patterns, or playful and mysterious against looped old dusty record samples. Or emotional and very real against more piano and acoustic guitar led elegant beat pattens. She has managed to make an album that clever straggles both pop and more expermermentail touches, weaving memorable and quirky songs, which can also can be tough and cool, or sensitive and human. Every song has its surprising or inventive element, be it looped-out old Germanic organ pump or weird throat tapping rhythmic elements or weird folds of street sounds put into sliding avant-pop structures. She’s managed to built an album that’s comfortable in both a club environment and attentive home listening. I Put A record on is musically world knowing, clever and thought-out album that will have you taping your feet along to it’s addictive beats, humming along to it’s tuneful grooves and enjoying it’s knowing and clever sound use and A1 production.
