Ju Suk Reet Meate - Solo 78/79 [De Stijl - 2007]This is a highly enjoyable reissue of solo work from the late 1970’s by one of the main demented minds by behind noise godfathers Smegma. Mixing together weird collages of voice samples and old adverts, avant jazz wonderings, noise discharge & surprising musical moments. The album is split into 2 side long suites that were original released on vinyl in the 1979 in a very limited number, and two shorter never released tracks from around the same time. The two suites are strange collages and audio outspillings that go from strange vocal samples that include cartoon samples, to sawing violin’s, throbbing organ elements, weird jazz unfolds & stuck rock and roll riffs, ect. Coming across as a lot more musically and less all over the place then Smegma's work- he often settles down into odd, charming & often melodic unfolds and structures of sound. It has quite the feeling of on some of the Residents early releasers like meet the Residents or certainly 3rd Reich & Roll in its tow song suite structure- though this is no way as sneering and nightmarish. As for the two extra tracks firstly we have Guitar & loops that brings to mind a more lo-grade and murky take on Merzbow’s looped biased guitar compositions. With avant jazz tooting and psychedelic effects and vocal farting / mumbling over the top. Lastly we have shortwave, which as it’s title suggest is radio noise & voices manipulated- with later on a thumbed guitar tone coming in. The only slight disappointment here is the sound quality as it’s clear it’s beign taken from one of the original vinyl pressing- with crackle etc, though it’s not too bad it would have nice to hear it from the original master tapes- but I guess there long lost. A welcome reissue of this long lost gem of early American noise, improvising and audio oddness, that has quite a few forays into more musical and coherent moments. To find out more & order direct drift in here Roger Batty
