Oren Ambarchi & Z'ev - Spirit Transform Me [Tzadik - 2008]This is a wonderfully blackened, often claustrophobic, sometimes noisy, dense and ritual tinged collaboration between Australian guitarist and percussionist Oren Ambarchi and prolific American percussionist and sound artists Z’ev. The pair forge together three long tracks of tension, percussion and an atmosphere that almost cuts you. The three tracks are named after the first three letters in the Hebrew/ Proto-Canaanite alphabet. Firstly we have Aleph which utilizes sinister/engulfing guitar drone and chilling vibraphone tone by Ambarchi and superbly edgy clunking and drifting percussion tones by Z’ev- it conjures up a great feeling of ominous religious dread, of healers turned to the dark side and an approaching demonic webbing of sound slowly but surely surrounding you then swallowing you into it’s pitched blacked expanse. The pair really build up such a cinematic, dense and suffocating Presence as the darkened drone deepens and z’ev feeds his prime evil percussive fair in and out of the stereo channels- it’s a great and I think my favourite moment here. Next up we the second track Bet which instead of growing blacked grace like the first track comes in with complex clattering, bangs and ritual like percussive matter. Having quite a sinister junk yard feel to begin with then things start to turn more nasty and atmospheric as Ambarchi moaning, roaring and droning guitar tone slides into the jungle of cluttering tone, with also a viola tone rises it’s sinister pitch and drone too. There is a more noisy learning going on here too which every so often gets quite nice and smarting. As the track goes up it’s builds up almost a tribal junk yard groove as a consistent rhythmic march is built up with the guitar sounding like steel grinding, ripping and tearing, along with other sound textures that sound like slurring and buckling machines. Lastly we have Gimel which returns to ominous religious tone of the first track, but this time it feels more doomy and graveyard tinged in it’s Presence and sonic temperament. With Ambarchi dropping his guitar texturing from the first few tracks to uses tolling and dread soaked tubular bells instead and z’ev uses more chain, groaning and at times wooden sounding percussive matter. The pair once more build up a great feeling of tension, anticipation and with this track quite an eerier, nocturnal vibe too. As the track goes up deeper, engulfing and blacked drone texture are pulled out of the track like shadows made solid and left to press down on your temples. This is the first time this pair have collaborated together and lets hope it’s not the last as the manger to conjuring up such tangible blacked atmospheres that seem to soak right into you. With both parties performing at the height of their sonic powers to build an album that has a distict and often nightmarish vibe that is very much of it’s own. So step into the circle and let the ritual begin… Roger Batty
