Un Festín Sagital - Epitafio a la Permanencia [Beta-Lactam Ring Records - 2008]Chilean project Un Festín Sagital offer here up their manic, cimatic and seriously mushed up third (but first readily available) album Epitafio a la Permanencia. And through out the albums life the band takes you on a bizarre muilt genre Rolla costa ride that conjures up the scope, invention and pure creative genius of the likes of Mr Bungle, Devil Doll. We go from bizarre and pumped-up rock meets carnival music, to building spacey and creep synth lined Goblin type soundtrack prog, to bright harmoinc post-rock meets organ risers, down to somber church organ meets 80’s horror film harmonics up to playfully metal guitar and down into engine purr meets sudden struck pianos and avant jazz honks. And this is all with-in the first ten or so minutes of the opening track!. Really this is one hell of a twisting and turning ride that darts, jumps and speeds all over the place musically A track will start off one way & you can be damn sure it will have complexly changed with a few short minutes- yet it never sound mess or out of control. The 11 piece that brought this wonderfully mayhem to life utilize a mixture of; guitars, synth’s, bass, Calimbra, radio waves, Electro Acoustic elements, Hammond organ, violin, Vola, sax, cello, Didgeridoo, flute and Chilean vocals that go from chanted and ritual, to deranged, manic and playful to more rock based. You can not pin down or classify Epitafio a la Permanencia at all sure there rock and prog elements here- but there also world elements, coral and soundtrack like interludes, electronic throb and pumps, string swoons, jazz freak-outs and all manner of musically genre pick ‘n’ mix. To try and divine or chart it anymore would be fertile you have to experience Epitafio a la Permanencia for your own- but act quick it’s only ltd to 400 copies!. Roger Batty
