To Get Her Together - John Sees Lilly [World In Sound - 2008]The bizarrely named To get her Together is the one man project of one Jeff Sanger from Portland USA- who makes authentic and shambolic 60’s psychedelic pop/rock with a great feel of Pink floyd's Syd Barrett period, The Electric Prunes and Donovan. John sees Lilly is the projects third album. From the songs make up of; organ weaved guitar, bass, drums, tripped out effects and stoned vocals, Right down to the warm if clunky production this could easily be a long lost album from the late 60’s. Lyric wise as expected we have dazed messed up nursery rhymes, quirky and nature based tales and charting of inner LSD adventures. The tracks for the most part stay relatively grounded and standard verse chorus, we have no really Interstellar Over Drive instrumental freak-outs here, though there are times when you think it could take off but never does like on the start of the last track Run away. All of the songs par one are penned by Sanger himself and that’s a great haphazard version of Kevin Ayers Clarence in Wonderland which fits in very nicely to the vibe of the rest of the album. An satisfyingly retro and spaced out collection of tracks that though steals a lot of its vibe and sonic territory from bands of the late 60’s there enough originality and quirkiness to make it shine in it’s own right.
