Son Lux - At war with walls and mazes [Anticon - 2008]Son Lux debut album At war with walls and mazes is an harmonic and atmospheric mix of singer song writer piano music, post-rock, pop, hip-hop and electro beat heavy work-outs. Been one of the more creative, consisted and enjoyable none avant-rap releasers to appear on the Anticon thus far Son Lux is masterminded by one New York based Ryan Lott who basically writes, plays and producers the whole album with a few small supporting roles from others. The album really is a heady, tuneful and highly creative mix of beats, throbbing electronics, hurt sometimes doomy yet melodic piano work-outs, guitar elements and other instrumental textures like sax, strings ect..You can hear hints of Nine inch nails, The Eels, husky voiced singer-song writers and shifting, bombastic sonic tactician’s like the Boo Raddleys around the Giant Steps album. Each song is a complex and shifting sonic beast that still mangers to keep with in it’s melodic and pop structure- this is clever, inventive and creative grown up pop music. On the whole a very accomplished and rewarding opening shot from Mr Lott with the only thing letting it down at times is seemingly lack of lyrically sophistication -with many of the tracks finding Lott repeating the same words over and over again. Mr Lott Clearly is an artist that shows great promise and mangers to balance nicely pop and commercial concerns with experimental and creative elements very well. At war with walls and mazes is a varied, vibrate and felt debut which I’m sure could make Mr Lott huge if it’s marketed right. Roger Batty
