Myra Davies - Cites and Girls [Moabit Music - 2008]Cites & Girls is a entertaining and creative collaboration between Canadian spoken word artist Myra Davies and German electronic artist Gudrun Gut who is also the head of the female focused experimental label Monika Enterprise. Davies spoken word texts go from: talking about visiting William Burroughs Bunker in the basement of New york Poet John Giorno house, to westerns man and woman’s obsession with possessions and collecting meaningless stuff. To visiting Belfast in the mid 80’s during the IRA troubles, to afternoons spent in Hanoi drinking tea and watching the world go by. She has a great descriptive and very listenable Canadian tone that is often very funny, human and picturesque- going from spoke word to rhythmic talking/sing on some tracks. With Gudrun Gut creating an wonderful and expressive backing to Davies texts that mixes: beats and electronics, harmonic quirkiness and atmospheric varied selection of instrumental tone, field recordings & samples. All in all a very enjoyable pairing of these two highly creative artists with each one of the ten tracks conjuring up there own vibe and air. Certainly one of the most enjoyable and consistent spoken work albums I’ve heard in a long while with Davies and Gut complementing each other wonderfully. Roger Batty
