The Sun Turns Black - The Sky Is Riven [New Forces - 2010]The Sun Turns Black is a new HNW project from Minneapolis based Stefan. S (who runs the New Forces label and is the mind behind harsh noise project Breaking The Will). This c30 tape offers up two side long tracks of fairly active, barren and storm licked wall-making that’s all inspired by the end of the world myths as detailed in ancient Norse poems. The tape comes in a simply black and white cover that features a bleak picture of an snow deep evergreen forest slope. And inside there's a quote from one of the oldest of the Norse poem( or Poetic Edda as their know) Völuspá regarding the end of the world.
The first sides untitled track smashers straight in with a fast paced roaring tone that sounds like high winds ripping and billowing through a barren ice 'n' snow locked forest land. Then at the minute and a half mark the tracks shifts into to a more rapid & offten hacking judder that’s under run by a harsh rolling drone- these two elements take up the rest of the track and remain fairly structural similar through-out, except for some slightly more storm battered and shifting hacks appearing in both tones make-ups as the track goes along The second sides untitled track once more rages straight in at full pelt with a mixture of roaring roll ‘n’ battering noise tones, huge ripping and tear tonalities-that bring to mind the sound of 100's of trees being uprooted, and a shifting 'n’ swirling fast paced hacking tones. It all feels very much you’re in the eye of the storm hanging on for dear life as the elements and Armageddon batter you in an extremely unrelenting way. “The Sky Is Riven” is a welcome first release from this new project that focus in on storm battering and end of the world themed ‘walls’. At times it quite brought to mind the work of weathered and storm battered dark HNW act Namazu Dantai, though The Sun Turns Black sound is less shifting and muilti-textured in it's attack.
