Brulvahnatu - Uterine Acid Swishes [Eternal Obscurity Records - 2009]Brulvahnatu is the one man Black Metal/Dark Ambient band formed by Kib Sreng since 2007. In that time (from 2007 to 2009) 10 demos have been released. Uterine Acid Swishes is Brulvahnatu’s first full length cd. From the start, the sounds created on Uterine Acid Swishes are musically diverse. Yes there is Black and Doom Metal riffs aplenty, but there are also moments of quiet melancholy a la Agalloch and in an unexpected way Bauhaus too; especially in the acoustic passages that are found within each song. Oodles of time changes also keep the mood interesting; which is helpful as the shortest song here is meager 17 minutes. Vocals tend to tread on the familiar Black Metal growling guttural rasp, which doesn’t hinder the sound, but adds to the overall depressive feeling.
With so many releases in a short amount of time, Brulvahnatu is a creative whirlwind of ideas. Oddly enough it seems the Dark Ambient tag is somewhat obscure here, there is much more of a depressed atmosphere prevalent than any Ambient one. Maybe earlier demos featured those sounds, but it is definitely not featured here. Tags and genres aside it is a dark journey of emotions and sinister surroundings; it will be interesting to see where each subsequent release takes us. Viktorya Kaufholz
