Blood Box - Funeral In An Empty Room [Loki Foundation - 2011]Blood Box is the solo project of Yen Pox member Michael JV Hensley. Funeral In An Empty Room is the third full length release from the project. On this latest release we find an otherworldly declaration of dark ambient. Starting with “Wither and Fade” and ending with “The Stain”, the eight songs here each present a sinister and esoteric vibe. On songs like “The Celestial Abyss” and “Ghost Procession”, the atmosphere takes a more innocent and ethereal tone, yet the under running feeling of menace still rears its head none the less. That is somewhat of the main premise here, things may seem dreamy and at times almost spacey, but there is always a dark, foreboding feeling that punctuates each song.
Production and execution of the eight songs is nearly perfect. From the subtle build in pitch intensity on “Battles Beneath The Earth”; that plateaus to a chorus of what sounds like disembodied voices to the massive drifting ambient sounds of “Armies Of The Midnight Sun” and “Far Beyond The Silent Sea”. All of them represent a very well thought out well crafted project of dark ambience.
The only criticism would be that things do get a bit unchanged at times within the songs themselves. Often making the listener ask “wasn’t this the last song?” Yet we would be nitpicky at best to cast aside such a well constructed pieces of music. Keep the short-comings to the side and relish the immense sounds that Blood Box has created. Viktorya Kaufholz
