Wooley, Corsano & Yeh - The Seven Storey Mountain [Important Records - 2011]“The Seven Storey Mountain” offers up a near on forty five minute slice of brooding, dark, building & heavy slice of improv seared drone matter. The release brings together three American based improvisers in the form of: Nate Wooley(Daniel Levin Quartet, Mêlée, solo work) on Amplified trumpet & tapes, Chris Corsano (Death Unit, Chikamorachi, solo work) on drums/ percussion & C Spencher Yeh(Burning Star Core & solo work) on Violin. The track slowly simmers & drifts into sonic view with a semi sour & brooding seesaw mixture of humming amplifier feed back & tape drone unfold. By around the 5th minute more defined edges of subtle percussive & trumpet textures start to edge into the track, and these start building up tension. By the 7th mintue Spencher Yeh periceing yet waveringly bleack violin saw is added to the mixture. As the track progresses along it’s near on forty five minute path the trio build detail & tension over humming & brooding heart of the track. The track finds Wooley creating great warbling & scuttling uneasy, Corsano adding taut yet controlled percussive runs & builds, and Spencher Yeh building a sickly seared & eerily grating dread into the whole affair. As the track moves along it slowly builds in it’s intensity, yet no one element ever overtakes the other, and central grim ‘n’ sour amplifier feed back point remains a constant & broodingly pained presences. In it’s last five or so minute the track nicely strips down to circling & brooding feed back bass drones that have this nice knocking ‘n’ bouncing ritual like feel to them that slightly seared by more higher pitched grates. All told this is a most enjoyable slice of intensifying yet brooding drone based improvisation, and all parties involved put on a impressive controlled yet seared performance. Roger Batty
