Goghal - Horion [Sweet Solitude - 2012]“Horion” is the sixth release in Sweet Solitude’s 'Shades Of Grey' series- each title in this series finds a HNW artist theme their release around a famous murder case or murders. This release finds Belgium based one man HNW/ Harsh Noise project Goghal sonically tattling the case of 1970’s Belgian murder & criminal Freddy Horion. Sadly all the text about the Horion case on the back of this release is written in Dutch, and as I don’t speak or read Dutch… so I had a little dig around on the web instead with Google translator locked ‘n' ready. Seemingly in June 1979 Horion and his accomplish Roland Feneulle, broke into the garage of Roland Steyaert Amandsberg- they murdered five of the family members as well as raping one of the families daughter. The pair escaped with 4,000 Belgian francs and a handful of jewels. Horion had also shot dead a dead the manageress of a shop in Ghent in February 1979. In 1980 Horion was convicted of six counts of murder, and sentenced to death by East-Flemish Assizes. Later this sentence was changed to life imprisonment- Horion is still in prison now, through he’s attempted to escape four times & has also made numerous appeals to be released. He’s often known as the 'Sunglass Killer', as he’s always worn sunglasses when his picture have appeared in the press. On offer here is a single & self titled 59.44 minute track. And it smashers straight into the ‘wall’- which is a mixture of a galloping ‘n’ rumbling yet slightly swirling mid to low end noise texture. This is ebbed & battered by this slightly higher toned jittering static tonality. The ‘walls’ very thick & battering in it’s attack, through there a few subtle textural shifts here and there along it’s near on hours length, and also from time to time he thins down one or another of the tones to great effect too. All told it’s a brutal yet rewarding slice of ‘wall-making’ which finds Goghal creating a mainly fixed yet subtle layer shifting slice of HNW. This is my second taster of Goghal’s work, and once again I’m impressed by its distinctive sound, and it’s brutal/dense attack. So “Horion” is another worthy addition to the 'Shades Of Grey' series, it’s just a pity the back text couldn’t have been translated to English…so us none Dutch speakers could understand more about the case.
