Rough Sex Quartet/Last Rape - Split [Unlimited Drift Recordings - 2011]

This split double CDR release brings together a full length disc a piece from two very brutal & often perverse HNW acts.

Disc one features three lengthy submersion in sleazed ‘n’ roasting wall making from mysterious northern England based Rough Sex Quartet. And Disc two features three slices of intense yet often atmospheric walled noise from Texas based Last Rape, which of course brings together respected noise artists Richard Ramirez & Sean E. Matzus.

The two discs come in a double DVD case, and feature perverse black ‘n’ white artwork that takes a foot powered Penis machine on one side of the case. And on the other side there’s a crudely drawn convey belt like  whipping machine, that has  4 or 5 people strapped to it that are being whipped by Victorian teacher like characters.

On disc one we have the Rough Sex Quartet tracks, and the first of these is “TitMeat”. This first track comes in at  a few seconds over the thirty minute mark, and the ‘walls’ built around a juddering ‘n’ scrubbing texturally roast that’s underfed by a billowing drone.  The track remains very full, thick & dense through-out it run time, and it’s mainly fixed in its form too.  It’s an ‘ok’ example of dense ‘n’ roasting walled noise, but it’s nothing too special.

Up next we have “Twitch Of The Sex Nerve”, and once again this comes in at a few seconds over the thirty minute mark. And this track comes ripping out of the speakers with a deep rumbling & violently juddering roasting, which is underfed by a thinner line of jittering static.  The two elements nicely rip, bay & mingle with each other in a most brutal & unflinching manner.   This is a really very effective slice of sleazed & violent wall making, and it’s the highlight of this first disc.

Lastly on disc one we have “Nine Lives Of A Wet Pussy”, and this is the shortest of the three tracks at the 19.52 mark. And this track is built around a mixture of juddering ‘n’ jittering noise- the ‘wall’ seems like it’s constantly going to slow & thin down to ANW type of thing, but it never really does it just keeps chugging ‘n’ slowly roasting along. All told it’s another rewarding track.

Over onto disc two and we have the three Last Rape tracks. First of these is “Death Walks At Midnight”, and this comes in at just under the twenty six & a half minute mark. The tracks ‘wall’ is built around a mid paced rumbling roll, and this is knitted with a mid ranged almost harmonic jittering ‘n’ rotating wheel like  element. It’s brutal, yet quite oddly calming in it’s feel- it's a good start to this second disc.

Track number two is entitled “Perversion Story”, and this comes in at a few seconds over the nineteen minute mark. This ‘wall’ is built around a slowed purring & electro juddering tone, and this is weaved ‘n’ meshed with a more mid paced jittering lo-fi static.  Also there’s seems to be this odd sort of distant wavering harmonic & dialogue element present from time to time too, but you can never clearly make out what it is.  All told it’s a very effective, and multi layered ‘wall’ that has your mind drift from first one element to the next.  I think this is my highlight of the second disc.

Lastly on disc two we have “Clap, You’re Dead”, and this track is built around a intense & seeming manically spinning mixture of juddering ‘n’ rotating mid toned almost harmonic noise wheel repetition. And under this is a buried & odd mixture of chanting like tone & possible a roasting billowing.  All this creates a searing, sleazed & almost psychedelic type vibe. Again this track is very intriguing in it’s multi layered mix, and your head really gets sucked in to trying to figure out what each layer is doing.

So all in all this split is very worthy & rewarding through out, with only a few tracks not quite cutting the mustard. It’s in a edition of 31 copies, so hopefully there are still some copies left now.
