Goghal / Kindvriendelijk - Split [Usain Bolt Records/Geluidsoverlast!!! - 2011]This double 3inch CDR split is from late 2011, and it brings together two Belgium based noise projects. The release features a disc a piece from the follow two projects: Goghal- a one man HNW project from Gent, and Kindvriendelijk- a two man HNW/Harsh noise project from Kortrijk. The two CDR’s come in small clear plastic case, and this features black print on tracing paper like paper stock- this cover takes in the projects names on the front, and on the back there’s half a star of Jerusalem & picture of a oriental women & her children sitting in front of a barren landscape. It’s a simple yet effective bit of packaging. Disc one is taken up by the single untitled Goghal track, and this comes in just shy of the thirty minute mark. The track is a very dense slice of walled noise that mixes together a thick line of roaring ‘n’ billowing noise, with thinner more cluttering ‘n’ jittering noise tone. The elements are bound together to create a very thick & total un-escapable mass of noise, yet Goghal mangers to create noise layer depth & texture layer separation too. For the first ten or so minutes Goghal lets the tones galloping away at each other in a fairly unchanged form, save for a few subtle & minor layer shifts. Around the 10 minute mark there’s this weird high pitched forking ‘n’ grating baying tone that can just be heard in the ‘walls’ flow. As the track progresses this element seems grow & expand to this odd sort of squawking or screeching collection of tones-which either bring to mind either a the call of a flying dinosaur, a odd warbling alien tongue, or some kind of morphed ‘n’ mangled horn sample. This element is kept fairly buried under the galloping layers of noise 'walling', so you can fully define it but ever so often you can make it out. This is another very worthy & rewarding track from Goghal, who really does have the ability to create very dense yet captivating 'walls' that have a lot of compelling detail in them. Disc two features two Kindvriendelijk tracks, and these last between just under the eleven minute mark, to just shy of the ten minute mark. I guess you’d say both tracks here are a mix of HNW & Harsh noise. Up first we have “Kameradengräbern”, and this is build around a mixture of slightly different low billowing ‘n’ ripping wall sustains, thinner juddering ‘n’ jittering crisper tone sears, and the odd more high pitch jitter. The track is more slow ‘n’ wallish Harsh noise than purely HNW as the textures do shift fairly often, though there is one particular muffled ‘n’ billowing tone that keeps returning. The second track is entitled “Tokarev SVT-40”, and this is built around a mixture of muffled jittering static circulations, rolling ‘n’ rumbling low end judders, mid to high pitch jitters ‘n’ bays, and few darts in crisper static jittering. This track moves even further into harsh noise territory, though there are still a few more fixed wallish elements from time to time. Also the track get more violent & active the longer it goes on too. On the whole both tracks here are ok examples of Harsh noise making with wall tendencies through for my tastes there are a bit too active.
So to sum up- the first disc offers up a very effective slice of longer form dense walled noise with some effective textural details. While the second disc offers up two slices of Harsh noise with HNW dwelling tendencies. Roger Batty
