Nar - What Lies Beneath The Woods [Claustrophilia - 2013]“What Lies Beneath The Woods” is the second release from this rather mysterious & information-less HNW project. This is a CDR release that offers up one dense & rather rewarding slice of walled noise. The CDR comes in a see-through DVD case that features grey photo-copied like cover that takes in a picture of some fairly dense yet bleak looking forest. Under the sleeve & inside the case are leafs, sticks & bits of long grass. The single track on offer here comes in at just over the seventy minute mark. The ‘wall’ is of the dense yet detailed type, and it’s built around a series of crusty ‘n’ rumbled bound noise textures that create this fairly rapid swampy like churning feeling, which is both intense yet oddly pleasing too. The tones utilize fall between low to mid ranged static & judder like textures, and the ‘wall’ remains very full, dense & splendidly muddy through-out it’s full length. I was rather taken by this projects first self titled release from early on this year, and I must say I’m even more taken with this release as the ‘wall’ here is both fittingly muddy & crusty, yet brutal & intense, while still managing to be both atmospheric & very entrancing too. Sadly like most HNW releases this is only ltd to a small amount of copies, in this case it’s just 15- so I advise any of you with even a vague interest in this genre to pick this up. With out doubt NAR is one of the most promising of the HNW scene newcomers. Roger Batty
