Sphäre Sechs - Tiefschlaf [Malignant Records - 2012]The origins of this release are explanatory as to the motive behind it and its subsequent execution. ‘Tiefschlaf’ is, of course, a self-evident title for this project. A project whereby Martin Sturtzer (Phelios) and Christian Stritzel combined their talents during a ‘sleep-concert’ at the Phobos Festival in 2011 - the results of which are captured on ‘Tiefschlaf’. Six split ‘Phases’ make up the release - comprising just under an hour of hypnotic ambience and incandescent soundscapes. The first ‘Phase’ begins upon a captured recording of gently lilting waves, slowly washing over a shoreline before retreating. The sounds then gradually blossom and mingle to create a non-threatening atmosphere through which the sleeper can journey. This latter aspect is significant throughout the ’Phases’- there is no exterior ‘threat’ to the sleeper in the context of the soundscapes and as such ’Tiefschlaf’ provides an impartial pillow through which the listener can be drawn into a deep state of trance-like slumber - whatever darkness results therefore has been developed from the listener’s sub-conscious rather than being present in the ‘Phases’. As such ’Tiefschlaf’ competently steps outside the conventional boundaries of ambient sounds and is formulated to enable an interaction and discourse between composers and listener, for which the music becomes a catalyst. The opening and closing of the experience using wave-sounds is almost baptismal in context, in that the listener experiences a washing away of the ego into whose absence enters a veil of warm electronic textures and passive meditations allow a more expansive unconsciousness to explore itself, before a return. ‘Tiefschlaf’ seems a deliberate act, rather than a residual effect common in the genre. In this aspect it retains some original character but is not striking or intuitive enough to set a new benchmark within the genre. Michael Cunningham
