Jute Gyte - Discontinuities [Jeshimoth Entertainment - 2013]Jute Gyte's take on the black metal form has always been complex, daring, sometime off-angle, but always creative & mostly rewarding. This new release sees the one man Missouri based project warping ‘n’ bending his black metal craft into very discordant & ugly shapes, yet still keeping the dense & complex composition structure of his past work. The album consists of seven tracks in all, and mostly the dense & microtonal guitar layered works last between just under the nine minute mark to just under the eleven minute mark a piece. The pace is mainly kept between rapid almost hard-core punk like, to more bent off-shape/mid paced & woozy. The tracks are mostly built around thick & repetitive mass of semi off-tune & wonky riffs that batter ‘n’ rage in a mostly un-forgiving manner. From time to time the tracks do dip into slightly more barren & unwell psychedelic moments, which take in: striped discordant guitar lines, wavering & sickly bass runs, and off –shape brews of wavering ambience & jazz-rock licked guitar texturing- but pretty soon the pace & density of the music is once more built-up again. Only the title track full departs from the dense, complex & discordant riff mass of most of the albums runtime. This track presents a series undistorted, de-turning & descending bass/ guitar textures- which create this truly grim, off-shape, & ugly feeling of floating yet drowsy discord. On the whole “Discontinuities” is a wonderfully unbalancing album that marries wrong-sounding unwell-ness, with complex & cleverly constructed riff craft. At first it may sound too wrong & too off-kilter, but give it a few plays & pretty soon you’ll find your self grimly soaking in the albums truly bleak, unwell & off-angle take on the black metal form.
