Acerbitas - Cold Water Ordeal [Self Release - 2013]“Cold Water Ordeal” is a 18 minute slice of dense & battering walled noise themed around the 15th to 18th century judicial practice of submitting a person to water to determine whether thier guilty or innocent of witchcraft. Acerbitas is the a HNW project of Englishman Michael Ridge- who is also known for his experimental noise project Zebra Mu, and running DIY noise label Quagga Curious Sounds. The project has been in existence since some point in 2010, and has so far amassed ten releases- taking in split, and stand alone mini CDRS. This self release comes in the form of a 3inc CDR which comes in a plastic sleeve with a silver art paper inlay that features just black ink printing. The inlays front cover takes in an old line drawing of a dead women been hooked out of the water after she subjected to trial by water. The single track on offer here is entitled “Ruth Osborne & Her Husband”- the track takes it name from an old & poor couple who were the last people in England to receive the ducking stool treatment in 1751; some fifteen years after rescinded of the Witch Trials law by British parliament, which was meant to make ‘ducking’ of suspected witches illegal. The ‘wall’ on offer here is a thick mixture of buzzing/roaring low-end fixed drone noise, that is topped off with a thick galloping ‘n’ crackling crust of noise tone. Pace wise it’s fairly rapid, with the ‘walls’ structure staying firm & unmoving through-out. This track/ release is another consistent example of this always well thought & executed UK walled noise project. Roger Batty
