Jute Gyte - Metonym [Jeshimoth Entertainment - 2013]Missouri based Jute Gyte don’t really like staying in one genre box, over the last few years their releases have dwelled-in & mixed together: progressive ‘n’ unbalancing polyrhythm lined black metal, wonky ‘n’ unhinged IDM/ electronica, doomed guitar work-outs, digital ‘n’ analogue fed harsh noise, and beyond. “Metonym” finds the project very much in a unhinged & unbalanced IDM/retro electronica setting. The pro CDR release conists of eleven tracks in all, and these run between to just over three minutes to just shy of the nine minute mark. Each of the eleven tracks is built around puzzling, angular & often un-settling atmospheres, which mix together strange 'n' severe beat progressing, isorhythmic rhythmic patterns, off – kilter gradient synth textures that flirt & dart with harmonic & non-harmonic sentiments. Genreal detailed 'n' complex electronics with wonky/unwell learnings, and later on a few subtle guitar textures too. If you can imagine a mix of a more lo-grade & slurred Autechre, melting retro video game sound tracking, surreal ‘n’ wonky late 70’s/ early 80’s sc-fi movie sound-tracking. Mixed with a dash of avant classical gone electronic, and moody yet striped grimly psychedelic meets classical guitar scaping- and you’ll get an idea of what to expect here. Though most of the tracks feature beat elements, there is a fair bit of variation from track to track in pace & elements used- yet all of the tracks possess a wonky/ unhinged edge. On the whole this was another well thought-out & effective slice of unwell/ moody IDM/ electronica from Jute Gyte, and it can either be brought in physical CDR form from here, or download it in digital form from the bands bandcamp page here Roger Batty
