Savage Cross - Ensepulchred Under The Weight of The Void:Compress [Occult Supremacy Productions - 2013]"Ensepulchred Under The Weight of The Void:Compressed To Nothing" offers up a mix of psychotically sludge bound & stretched blacked metal, suffocating & disorientating doom drone hazes, & buzzing dark drone matter. Behind the project is Evan Craig of creative HNW project Ritual Stance, and the project came about in late 2011 to early 2012. Opening up the release we have the lengthy entitled “ At The Foot Of Your Own Grave There Is no Farther Than That Of Denial”, and this eleven minute track summons up a disorientating grim & chaotic mix of: slow chiming black metal guitar work, hovering & morose overloaded doom riffing, stumbled-to-suddenly manic drum runs, and sickly cascading /grimly sliding of dark guttural bays & demonic laughter. Track number two is entitled “ An Always Empty Vessel” and it comes in at the 12.15 mark. The track paints a bleak & discordant sonic vista that moves with building layers of epic & morose black singed guitar tone, sustained purred & pitch black guitar hum, guttural laughter & monster from the pit like bays. Then at around the 6th minute it sudden lurches into a clamouring & ultra muffled rapid drum attack, seared & reduced grim blacked guitar texturing, and huge clouds of guttural & truly prime evil monster from the abyss barks- the rest of the track nicely & haphazard shifts between winding ‘n’ wavering blacked metal riff craft, and sudden manic galloping drum attacks before it drifts away in a fading haze of slowing blacked guitar tone crunch. The final track “Catharsis I: Lead Steadily Into The Rolling Tar of Failure” is somewhat of departure from the first two tracks, as it focuses in on more layered ‘n’ building dark drone matter. In it's 30 or so minute runtime it focus in on a slowly building wall of buzzing ‘n’ juddering grim tone matter, which creates a nicely oppressive & coolly isolating slice of pressing & airless drone matter. The track works as an effective & fixed grim sonic pallet cleaner after the discordant, off-kilter & often jarring blacked scaping of the first two tracks.
So to sum-up this a most effective three track release which moves from more disorientating & unhinged mixers of sludge-up blacked metal, truly heavy & oppressive doom drone matter. Onto more oppressive & frozen buzz drone studies. This release comes in a fairly large edition ( by underground release) of 50 copies, so all being well you should still be able to pick this up.
