Big Hole - Gertie [Listen Loudly - 2015]Here’s a three inch cdr from this Denton Texas based walled noise project. The release offers up a just under twenty minute slice taut, searing, & sadistic yet rewardingly detailed wall making. The disc is themed around the crimes of Gertrude Nadine Baniszewski (Gertie to her friends). An Indiana divorcee who in October 1965 oversaw and facilitated the prolonged torture, mutilation, and eventual murder of Sylvia Likens- a teenage girl she had taken into her home. The CDR comes in a clear plastic slip sleeve, and on it front cover is mug shot of Ms Baniszewski, and on its reverse track listing, timing, links etc. The track opens up with a sample of an interview with one of the people who tortured Sylvia Likens under Ms Baniszewski instructions- this last around a minute or so, then the ‘wall’ kicks in. The ‘walls’ constructed around a base of fixed & constant churning dense yet wiry static- this is topped with a fairly complex & detailed pattern of swirling, poping, crackling, and dragging noise texturing. The base works as a great nasty ‘n’ taut setting, with the active & detailed textured pattern really sucking you in. Also the pattern does very much bring to mind the sound of some kind of sadistic, cruel, and detailed physical torture, which of course works well with the tracks theme. I’ve always been a sucker for true crime theme walled noise, and I must say this ‘wall’ both fit’s the crime it’s themed around, and is a rewarding work in its own right. Let’s hope the project decides to some more true crime themed walls in the future- as it clearly has the talent for it. Roger Batty
