Lurid Hallway - Door Four [Knife & Needle Records - 2016]Door Four is the third release from this Gloversville, New York based project, which produces dense industrialized walled noise. The release comes in either physical form as a CDR on Australia’s Knife & Needle Records, or as a digital download from the projects bandcamp site- I’m reviewing the downloadable version. The other two release from this project have been themed around cult films- the projects first released Door Two, was themed around 1967 Spaghetti Western Death Rides a Horse. And their second release Door Three was themed around the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. It’s not really very clear if this one is once again film themed, as the black & white front cover picture doesn't really make it very clear, what the theme is . It feature some Christmas lights spread along a concrete floor, and two rather indistinctive collage pics. The single forty one minute track featured here is called "Agnes' Door". It’s built around a constantly feasting blend of galloping, ripping, and shredding low-to-mid range noise, and ever so often in the dense & roasting maelstrom you get this skittering/knocking texture( possible a loop of something metallic been dragged along a concrete floor). These textures remain fairly set & fixed for the first half or so of the track, but after that a thicker rolling layer is added to the mix, and this subtle morphs though the rest of the track. Also the skittering/ knocking element seeming gets more layered & persistent in it’s attack, having an almost lo-fi tribal stark-ness about it. In the last few minutes a blend of more spluttering ‘n’ searing yet dense roasting comes into play, with the skittering/ knocking still churning away in the background….and in the very last minute the layers thin back, until you are just left with the looped knocking/ skittering element. The track offered up here is no great departure from the projects other work, but it’s no less satisfying. The knocking/ skittering element really pulls you into the wall, and I also enjoy the way the other textures are subtle adjusted through-out. All in all Door Four is another rewarding release from the Lurid Hallway project. Roger Batty
