Julian Curwin - The Tango Saloon [Ipecac - 2006]Tango Saloon is an album of wonderful accomplished, mellow instrumental music, that users tango’s as a start off point. But mixes in lots of different genres along, the way. Like jazz, easy listening, slightly world music flavour, soundtrack elements and souring snthy work. And it’s all played with such conviction and flare, which makes it the more enjoyable. Guess connections to John Zorn’s work can be seen, along with touches of the off kilter waltz's of Mr Bungle's –Disco Volante, but this still has very much it’s own character. Man with Bongos mixes cheesey 80’s synth with bongos, along with a brass section that sounds straight out of an early Residents album, and sprinkle on a slight Parisian come jazz air. And you can picture flared nylon suits, hectic case through over crowned streets, and psychedelic pictures of the Eiffel Tower, then it pulls the rug from under you and goes all cowboy!, ala Morricone's soundtrack For a few dollars more. The little plan that could, mixes circus type vibe, with some wonderful tuba playing and xylophone ticking – that’s brings to my mind the theme music from Mr Ben (70’s UK TV kids show). Formaggio is wonderful crisp waltz come tango, played out by accordion and exquisite violin, you can imagine a moustachioed, stern look man forceful tangoing across a highly polished floor, his raven haired dance partner, deep in concentration. So yet another highlight of this year, well worth a look what ever your musical likes. Roger Batty
